Charms & Wards
Charms and wards are small objects, ornaments or accessories that are believed to have magical properties. They can be made from a variety of materials, including stones, crystals, metals, wood, and even feathers. They are often inscribed with symbols or words that represent their intended purpose.
Charms and wards are often used to protect the wearer from harm, to attract good luck, or to promote specific goals. While many people believe that there are spiritual or mystical factors which power charms and wards, there is also a proven psychological effect at play which has been shown to affect outcomes. Who knows, perhaps both explanations are true…
The use of charms and wards dates back to ancient times and across all known cultures, here are some examples that you may recognised that are still used today:
-
A horseshoe is often hung above doorways to bring in good luck and ward off misfortune.
-
A four-leaf clover is a symbol of good luck and is often worn as a charm as well as to connect to cultural heritage.
-
Wedding rings are used by many cultures to symbolise the union between two lovers and bless their bond.
-
Many people, including professional athletes, have a “lucky" item that, if nothing else, boosts their confidence and expectations of achievement, which has been shown to positively affect performance.
Charms Vs Wards
The difference between charms and wards is subtle and often disputed to the point where some argue that they are just different names for the same thing. Generally speaking a charm is designed to attract while a ward is intended to repel, however the issue with this distinction lies in outlook; surely a charm that empowers its owner with confidence could also be seen as a ward repelling insecurity. The same can be said for success and failure, resolve and temptation and really most concepts as everything has its antithesis.
Charms can be worn on the body, carried in a pocket, or placed in a special place in the home. They are often given as gifts to loved ones, but it is not uncommon for people to make or purchase their own.
