Herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of healthcare and is still a cornerstone of many modern approaches. Although they are often associated with alternative medicine, there is actually a lot of scientific evidence to support the use of many herbal and natural treatments and a number of them are equally or more effective than leading pharmaceuticals in treating common conditions such as depression and anxiety, and with far less side effects.
Around 80% of the planet use herbal medicine as a part of their primary healthcare, yet in the UK and US it seems as though the majority of the population are missing out on this easily accessible, cheaper and generally safer option. This is despite the fact that around 1 in 4 drugs prescribed by doctors are derived from plants, with about 8 out of 10 of all registered medicines being extracted from or based on plant products and around half of the new medications that have been approved since the 1980’s also being plant based.
Pharmaceuticals and other conventional Western medical interventions are generally very efficient at treating the symptoms of illness and disease and, despite some issues with business compromising the scientific research, they can generally be trusted to be safe and effective. However, compared to the majority of herbal remedies, most pharmaceuticals have a lot more potential unwanted side effects and many are therefore not ideal for long term use.
The foundational approach to health recommends the use of scientifically supported herbal treatments to treat many long term or chronic conditions, as this means the patient is less exposed to unwanted side effects that can make their overall health worse. This is not to undermine or deny the use of pharmaceutical medication; just a recognition that it is often best for treating acute symptoms in the short term, or for more serious conditions where the need for treatment outweighs the risks of side effects.
There are also situations where a natural approach may be more effective than conventional medicine; a good example of this is with Aspirin, a common, over-the-counter medication used as a painkiller which also has unwanted side effects such as irritating the stomach lining and prolonged usage can cause stomach ulcers. Compare this with Willow Bark, a closely-related, naturally occurring painkiller which has been found to be more efficient than Aspirin and with no serious side effects, making it far more suitable for managing chronic pain.
Of course, not all herbs and plant based medicine is effective or safe in every situation, which is why The Psorcery Project will only ever recommend treatments that are evidence based and supported by science and we include a fact sheet with uses, dosages and any side effects or health warnings with each of our products.
