Potential Side Effects: 

  • Large doses may cause stomach aches, dizziness, nausea or diarrhoea

  • With large doses you will likely have a yellow stool

  • Although generally tolerated when applied topically, will almost likely stain skin temporarily

  • Some people may suffer from allergic reaction

 

Who Should Avoid:

  • Be cautious with excessive amounts if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Do not take if you have gallstones, a bile duct obstruction or other gallbladder problems

  • Be cautious if you are trying for a baby as turmeric may affect sperm count

  • Speak to your Doctor before taking Turmeric if you have liver problems or are taking any medications which are broken down by the liver

  • Avoid for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery or undergoing anaesthetic

  • Be cautious if you take Anti-Diabetes medication as the combined reaction can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar levels

  • Be cautious if taking with Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet medications or other medications which slow blood clotting as this can increase the effect as well as vulnerability to bruising and excessive bleeding

  • Speak to your Doctor before taking Turmeric if you have any hormone sensitive conditions, oestrogen sensitivity or are on hormonal treatment

  • Speak to your Doctor before taking Turmeric if you are on any cancer medications or receiving cancer treatments

  • Turmeric might decrease how much Talinolol and Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) the body absorbs. Speak to your Doctor before taking Turmeric with these medications

  • Speak to your Doctor before taking Turmeric if you are on any blood-thinner medication such as Warfarin

  • Do not take if you take medications to prevent the rejection of organ transplants

  • Taking turmeric while taking amlodipine (Norvasc) might increase the effects and side effects of the medication

  • Speak to your Doctor before taking Turmeric if you are taking P-Glycoprotein Substrates or medications which move through the cells with pumps

  • May also have minor interaction with Norfloxacin (Noroxin), Paclitaxel (Abraxane, Onxol), Docetaxel (Taxotere) and Glyburide (Diabeta)

 

Recommended Dosage:

  • 500-1500mg taken orally daily for up to three months is safe and effective for most treatments. 

  • Can also be used topically

  • Can also be used in aromatherapy

  • Safe for children in smaller doses; do not exceed 750mg per day
